Keyword research for small businesses: where to start

A keyword is what your customer types into Google. Choosing them well helps you create pages that answer real searches instead of writing into the void.

What a keyword really is

It is not a single word but a phrase or a question: “web agency Lahore”, “how to outsource website development”. Behind every search there is an intention: to learn, compare, buy or find a place.

Four intentions to recognise

  • Learn: “how does web outsourcing work” → an article
  • Compare: “WooCommerce vs Shopify” → a comparison guide
  • Buy: “e-commerce website quote” → a service page
  • Local: “web agency near me” → a local page and Google Business Profile

Get an estimate

Step 1: start with your customers

Write down the questions they ask by phone, message or in meetings. These are your first ideas, and they are often more precise and more useful than general terms.

Step 2: expand with free tools

  • Search Console, to see which searches already bring you visits
  • Google’s suggestions while you type
  • The “People also ask” box
  • Google Ads Keyword Planner, available with an account

Combine these sources to get a list of a few dozen phrases.

Step 3: aim for long-tail keywords

Short, popular searches are hard to win. Longer, more specific searches such as “outsource web development to Pakistan” have less competition and attract more motivated visitors. They are the best entry point for a young website.

Step 4: see who already ranks

Type the phrase into Google and look at the results: big sites, directories, small blogs? If the first page is dominated by very large players, competition is strong. If you see sites of a similar size to yours, it is a good lead.

Step 5: group by page

Match each page with one main keyword and a few related phrases. Avoid targeting the same keyword with several pages: they would compete with each other. Place the main keyword in the title, the first paragraph and one subheading, then write naturally.

An example for a web agency

  • “outsource to Pakistan” → information article
  • “dedicated development team Pakistan” → service page
  • “digital agency Lahore” → local page and Google Business Profile

Common mistakes

  • Choosing very general, highly competitive words
  • Ignoring search intent
  • Repeating the same keyword artificially
  • Creating several pages on the same topic
  • Never going back to measure results

Track and adjust

Once a month, check in Search Console which phrases you appear for, your clicks and average position. Strengthen pages that are rising and revise those that stall.
